Sydney Airport to CBD — Every Transport Option Compared

Sydney Airport sits 8 km south of the CBD. The fastest option (taxi/shuttle) takes 20–35 minutes; the cheapest (public bus) takes 50+ minutes. Choose based on how you weight cost vs time vs hassle:

  • Airport Link Train — $20.92 (with $17.20 station access fee). 13 min to Central. Good for solo travellers, no luggage, peak hours.
  • Public Bus (route 400) — ~$4 with Opal. 50 min. Cheapest but slow and indirect.
  • Uber / DiDi — $35–80. 25 min. Surge pricing in peak.
  • Sydney Taxi — $50–65 metered + $5 airport surcharge. 25 min.
  • Prime Rider Private Shuttle — Fixed $49 from CBD addresses. 25 min. Door-to-door, no surge, all tolls included. Book.

For families, groups of 3+, anyone with luggage, late-night arrivals, or anyone who values predictable pricing — a private shuttle is generally the best total value.

Airport to CBD

The Shortest Trip in Sydney, and the Most Overpriced

The airport is a handful of kilometres from the CBD, which makes the run short and the pricing strange. A metered fare on a bad afternoon can exceed a fixed fare booked in advance by a wide margin for the same journey.

Booking ahead settles it: one number, agreed in writing, tolls and GST inside, and no meter reacting to the Eastern Distributor. Traffic on the day is our problem rather than a line on your receipt.

For one traveller with hand luggage the train is genuinely competitive and worth taking. For two or more, or anyone with checked bags, the door-to-door total usually favours the private car — compare both before booking.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Cheapest is the public bus (~$4 with Opal). Train is $20.92 (includes $17.20 station access fee). Uber / DiDi $35–80 with surge. Sydney taxi $50–65 metered + $5 airport surcharge. Prime Rider is a fixed $49 from CBD.

Fastest options take 20–25 minutes (private transfer, Uber, taxi). Train Airport Link takes 13 minutes to Central + walking time at each end. Public bus 50+ minutes.

Worth it if you're solo, travelling light, going directly to a station near Central, Town Hall or Wynyard, AND not in a hurry. The $17.20 station access fee makes it expensive for couples or families.

Fixed fares from $45 from inner Sydney suburbs, $89–$99 from Western Sydney (Parramatta, Blacktown), and $149+ from Penrith / Blue Mountains. Tolls and GST are inside every fare, and surge pricing does not exist here. Get an emailed quote.

All three terminals — T1 International (every overseas flight), T2 Domestic (Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Rex), and T3 Domestic (Qantas and QantasLink only). See our terminals overview.

After landing, switch your phone on. A direct call from the driver confirms where you will meet. Free terminal WiFi means international arrivals can get online straight away.
