Travelling to Sydney Airport
with Pets โ Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about getting your pet to Sydney Airport stress-free: carrier rules, vet documents, check-in tips, and booking a pet-friendly private shuttle.
Why a Private Shuttle Is the Best Choice for Pets
Shared services add stress for animals. A private transfer gives your pet a calm, direct journey.
No Strangers โ Less Anxiety
Pets pick up on other passengers' energy. A private transfer means your pet travels with only your group โ no unfamiliar people, no barking from neighbouring seats.
Direct Route โ Shorter Journey
Every extra minute in a vehicle adds stress for animals. A private shuttle goes straight to the airport with no detours, minimising your pet's time in transit.
Space for Carrier & Luggage
Pet carriers take up room. Our vehicles have the boot space to accommodate your carrier alongside your regular luggage comfortably โ no cramped arrangements.
What to Prepare Before You Leave
Two checklists: one for your shuttle transfer, one for the airport and airline.
1 For Your Shuttle Transfer
- Mention your pet when booking. Tell us the species, breed size, and carrier dimensions so we assign the right vehicle.
- Secure carrier or crate. Your pet must travel in an enclosed, ventilated carrier for the whole journey โ no loose animals in the cabin.
- Line carrier with absorbent pad. Accidents happen on stressful travel days. A pad inside protects the carrier and the vehicle.
- Withhold food 2โ4 hours before. Reduces the risk of motion sickness during the drive.
- Water before departure, not during. Offer fresh water at home immediately before leaving.
- Bring a familiar blanket or toy. A scent from home calms animals during transit.
- Keep documents accessible. Have vet certificates in your carry-on, not buried in checked luggage.
2 For the Airport & Airline
- Health certificate from a registered vet issued within 10 days of travel (most airlines require this).
- Microchip documentation โ some airlines and all international destinations require proof of microchipping.
- Vaccination records โ especially rabies vaccination for international travel.
- Airline-approved carrier โ dimensions vary by airline. Check your carrier meets the exact spec before travel day.
- Import permit if flying to a country with strict biosecurity (e.g. New Zealand, Hawaii).
- Arrive 2โ3 hours early. Pet check-in takes longer and often requires a dedicated counter.
- Confirm cargo or cabin booking โ most airlines require pets to be pre-booked separately from your flight ticket.
Always confirm with your airline. Pet policies, carrier size limits, and documentation requirements vary significantly between carriers and change frequently. Verify requirements with your specific airline at least 7 days before travel.
Your Pet's Journey โ Door to Departure
Before the Shuttle Arrives
Give your pet a short walk or exercise 30โ60 minutes before the shuttle pickup. A tired pet is a calm pet โ especially important for dogs.
Place your pet in the carrier at least 15 minutes before pickup so they have time to settle rather than being rushed in at the last second.
Lay a worn T-shirt or familiar blanket in the carrier base. Your scent reduces anxiety significantly more than unfamiliar bedding from a pet store.
Do not administer sedatives without explicit vet approval. Many vets now advise against sedation for air travel as it can affect breathing at altitude.
Mention your pet at booking โ not on the day
Letting us know in advance means we assign a vehicle with the right boot space and a driver who is comfortable with animals. Last-minute requests cannot always be accommodated.
At Sydney Airport
Head to the dedicated live animal check-in counter โ most airlines require this rather than the standard check-in desks. Confirm the location with your airline in advance.
Your pet will be weighed (carrier included). Make sure the carrier is correctly labelled with your name, contact number, destination, and your pet's name.
Keep your pet covered with a light cloth over the carrier while moving through the terminal. Reducing visual stimulation lowers stress in most animals.
Once checked in, say your goodbyes at the counter. Do not open the carrier in the terminal โ your pet is safer and calmer staying inside.
Sydney Airport pet facilities
Sydney Airport does not have a general passenger-facing pet holding area. Pets are processed through cargo or the airline's dedicated animal handling unit. Arrive early so there is no rush.
